Staged in Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau, the exhibition ARTandPRESS presents key exponents of the contemporary international art scene whose works examine the current state of the press, as a daily opinion-forming institution and mediator of information, and the associated questions relating to perception, reality and truth. The show documents the diversity of approaches to the medium adopted by artists, highlights the interaction between art and the press and seeks to identify the different concepts of truth.
For ARTandPRESS, around 30 artists have selected works from their oeuvre or fashioned new pieces especially for the exhibition. Included among the positions represented here are those by Gilbert & George, Damien Hirst, William Kentridge, Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter. Similarly, artists such as Christian Boltanski, Marlene Dumas, Olaf Metzel, Farhad Moshiri, Elisabetta Benassi, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Erwin Wurm have also addressed this issue. An historical section, presented in digital form, complements the show with a documentation of works from the second half of the 19th century.
ARTandPRESS is a project initiated by the Foundation for Art and Culture in Bonn under the artistic direction of Walter Smerling. Among those serving on the expert advisory council are Götz Adriani, Heiner Bastian, Siegfried Gohr, David Hornemann von Laer, Peter Iden and Norman Rosenthal. Hans-Joachim Petersen is responsible for the coordination.
