The Popes and the Unity of the Latin World

21.05.2017 - 31.10.2017

Resumo

2017 will mark the 500th anniversary of Reformation. Before they went their separate ways, though, Catholics and Protestants were bound by a common 1500-year history. Christianity, rooted in Judaism, rose from its origins as a small sect in the eastern Roman world empire to become one of the major world religions. The papacy became a spiritual and secular authority that shaped not only the development of theology but also the formation of the Latin Western World.

Em pormenor

The special exhibition “The Popes and the Unity of the Latin World” will open with St. Peter and examine the evolution of the papacy until the early 16th century. The most important phases of its history will be presented by exploring the impact of eminent popes.

Together with the University of Heidelberg and the Vatican, the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim will be a comprehensive presentation of the history of the papacy for the first time ever with this exhibition. Exceptional objects loaned from the Vatican and other museums will show the fascinating development of the papacy from its beginnings to the Renaissance.

The organizers have obtained his Eminence Kurt Cardinal Koch from Holy See and President of the Bundestag Dr. Norbert Lammert from the Federal Republic of Germany as patrons.

The exhibition will be shown in Mannheim in the spring of 2017 and at the Vatican in the winter of 2017.
