The collections of the Military Museum cover over 200 000 artefacts. The artefact collections consist of colours, decoration, arms, equipment and art collections. There are artefacts from the time when Finland belonged to Sweden up to the present day, with emphasis on the period since Finland became independent. Most artefacts are organised in research collections or stored. Some of the artefacts are placed in other military museums in Finland.
The museum has also a photograph archive in which there are over 200 000 photographs. The archive serves exhibition, research and publishing functions. The Military Museum also collects literature related to military history.
