Pinakothek der Moderne - Museum of Modern Art

Designed by architect Stephan Braunfels, the building is remarkable for its open and spacious architecture; it provides a stage for various interconnections that will again and again provide visitors with new and surprising insights.

Museum visitors are treated to an array of paintings, sculptures, video installations, photographs, drawings, architectural models and design items in a museum on the scale of the Pompidou Centre in Paris or the Tate Modern in London.

The supra-disciplinary concept of the Pinakothek der Moderne reveals the individual collections as interrelated parts of a larger cultural whole while upholding their identity. With rotating interdisciplinary exhibitions and a multi-faceted events programme, the Pinakothek der Moderne will continuously focus on the numerous links between the various domains of the arts.

Together with the adjacent Alte Pinakothek and Neue Pinakothek collections, the Pinakothek der Moderne forms a wholly unique museum complex covering art from late Medieval times through to the present day, including works as diverse as Dürer’s 'Self-portrait' and Bruce Naumann’s 'World Peace'. The three Pinakotheks, collectively with the Glyptothek, the Antikensammlungen and the Lenbachhaus – all located between downtown and Schwabing – make up Munich’s new art complex; together they act as a strong magnet to attract both experts and the general public.

Key works of various classical modernists, such as Beckmann, Kandinsky, Klee, Magritte and Picasso form a focal point of the ART collection. Major groups of works by the subsequent generation of artists represented by Bacon, Baselitz, Beuys, Judd, de Kooning, Polke, Twombly and Warhol (among others) characterise contrasting directions in 20th century art. Contemporary art is represented as well, for example, by Pipilotti Rist’s video installations and by Jeff Wall’s illuminated photographs.

With a GRAPHICS collection of over 400,000 works on paper, from Leonardo through to Cézanne and up to contemporary artists, visitors can familiarise themselves with the museum’s broad range of prints and drawings. Due to light sensitivity, the exceptionally valuable works will be presented in alternating exhibitions.

The Architecture Museum of Munich’s Technical University has the largest specialised ARCHITECTURE collection in Germany, comprising some 350,000 drawings, approximately 100,000 photographs and 500 models from Balthasar Neumann through to Erich Mendelsohn and Le Corbusier as well as from contemporaries Günter Behnisch and Shigeru Ban.

The DESIGN section, featuring over 50,000 items of 20th- and 21st-century applied arts, leads the way internationally and integrates several completely new fields within its collection, such as industrial design, sports equipment, vehicles, and objects related to the computer culture. On exhibition are, among other things, early prototypes of designed objects from the Industrial Revolution and Art Nouveau through to the Bauhaus. Furniture classics, such as items by Eileen Gray and Charles and Ray Eames, objects by Isamu Noguchi, Ron Arad or design visionaries such as Colani and John Maeda, with his trailblazing interactive screens, are also on display.
