Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rijeka will creatively approach the tradition of modernity and vivid reality of contemporary art to generate dynamic, open and critical environment in which the general public will gain understanding and affinity for the art of today. The collection of artworks in the museum today encompasses more than 5,000 works, which cover the period from the end of the 19th century on.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka was founded in 1948. From the very beginnings, with programmes like the first collective exhibitions of contemporary art in Yugoslavia, held at the Rijeka Salon from 1954 to 1963, the Young Artists of Yugoslavia Biennial, 1960 to 1961, the Young Artists of the Mediterranean Biennial from 1993 to 1997, a three part research and exhibition project that provides a view of the architecture of Modernism, Art Nouveau and Revivalism in Rijeka, created in the 1996-2003 period, and the International Exhibition of Drawings, which has been held regularly since 1968, the museum has built up a reputation of being one of the highest ranking institutions in the visual arts in Croatia.

Because of the overall high quality of its work, the museum has been confided the task of presenting Croatian art and artists at prestigious international events such as the Venice Biennale (1997) with Dalibor Martinis; the Sao Paolo Biennale in 2004 (Zlatko Kopljar); the Venice Biennale of 2007 (Ivana Franke) and so on. Since 1991 the museum has regularly organised the presentation of Croatia at the Biennale of Young Artists of the Mediterranean. In addition it is a regular part in the artist in residence exchange programmes - EERE, NIFCA and PS1, playing a key role in the enlargement of knowledge about Croatian contemporary art on the international art scene.
