Since its foundation in 1889, the Musée des Arts asiatiques-Guimet has been one of the main vectors of artistic, historical and religious knowledge of Asian civilisations. The items brought back by French archaeological exhibitions have been added to through many gifts and legacies.

Some of the collections are of international renown, such as the Khmer sculptures, Dunhuang paintings from Central Asia, Tibetan paintings, Japanese prints, ancient bronzes and Chinese ceramics.
