in detail

Towards the end of his life, Gustave Moreau (1826 - 1898) decided to convert his house into a museum to hold the main body of his work. He extended the building and reworked several of his earlier paintings in a larger size. He died before all the works were hung and left to Henri Rupp the task of completing his project. The museum was opened to the public in 1903. It contains 6,000 works by Moreau.
