Modrijan Homestead, mill and sawmill

in detail

The Modrijan Homestead is located in the heart of the Postojna Cave Park. Miller’s trade is one of the oldest activities the human race has been involved in, which comes as no surprise as flour has since the ancient times been one of the staples for a number of foodstuffs. By learning about the history of mills and the miller’s trade one also gets familiar with the development of the technical knowledge, the control over nature and thereby the exploitation of natural resources.
Modrijan Homestead, Mill and Sawmill
The Modrijan Mill was not the first in this region. The original mill has been situated facing the Pivka swallow-hole near the cave; however, it was washed away during a major flood in 1577. After this event the mill was moved about 100 m upstream. In old depiction from 1830 the mill had four wheels; it was at its biggest in the second half of the 19th century, when the mill and the sawmill were driven by as many as six waterwheels.
