The MAMbo further strengthens a vocation for contemporary art already implied in the activities of the Modern Art Gallery in Bologna, of which MAMbo is a planned natural evolution.
The ground floor of the museum hosts 'Focus on Contemporary Italian Art', an area entirely dedicated to the exhibition of recently acquired works of young Italian artists with the ambitious purpose of supporting and assisting cultural development in the present and that of mapping out a route in the history of Italian contemporary art with its own permanent collection. Represented artists include: Massimo Bartolini, Luisa Lambri, Eva Marisaldi, Luca Pancrazzi, Paola Pivi, Alessandra Tesi, Patrick Tuttofuoco and Francesco Vezzoli.
The first floor of the building is dedicated to temporary exhibitions: its architectural structure is often transformed through specific interventions connected to different exhibition projects.
The mezzanine of the museum hosts the Library – newspaper library. Born in 1997 in the previous premises of the GAM (Modern Art Gallery), it still has over 18,000 twentieth century art volumes, of which 8,000 are available for consultation.
The graphic works collection composed of more than 2,000 prints and drawings, as well as the various stock that has enriched the patrimony of the GAM (Modern Art Gallery), are gathered in the archives for scholars and researchers to consult.
Apart from the intensive didactic activities of the educational department, which organizes and promotes events linked to the exhibitions, the MAMbo also hosts book presentations, conventions, round tables and meetings with illustrious representatives in the field of architecture, music, poetry and theatre, offering visitors the chance to visit the museum first-hand in an informal atmosphere.
In addition, services offered by the museum include the “Ex- Forno” restaurant-cafeteria and the Bookshop run by Skira.
