Hamburg Kunsthalle

in detail

The Hamburg Kunsthalle is one of the few museums in which visitors can view art from the Middle Ages through to the present day. Founded as a civic rather than a courtly establishment, the museum considers itself primarily an institution for the citizens and guests of the city of Hamburg. We want to keep moving, therefore we occasionally change the collections on show -presenting the works in a new light, adding new accents through acquisitions and loans and introducing unfamiliar art worlds to the museum through exhibitions. We bring old works out of store and put newer ones up for debate, creating a centre for both the mind and spirit through discussions, lectures by prominent artists, talks and openings.

The Kunsthalle's three interlinked buildings (erected in 1869, 1919 and 1997) give the museum its characteristic angular progression of rooms - a challenge and an opportunity for visitors to discover new wonders on every visit to this treasure store.
