The Belvedere’s two magnificent palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere, were built in the 18th century as the summer residence for the important general Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736). He chose one of the most outstanding Baroque architects Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt (1668-1745).
The palaces with their extensive gardens are considered to be one of the world’s finest Baroque landmarks. Momentous events have taken place in the Upper Belvedere’s Marble Hall and from here there is a spectacular view of Vienna.
Upper Belvedere
The palaces with their extensive gardens are considered to be one of the world’s finest Baroque landmarks. Momentous events have taken place in the Upper Belvedere’s Marble Hall and from here there is a spectacular view of Vienna.
Bomb attacks in 1944 and 1945 did great damage to both palaces, which were carefully restored after the war. The most important event in Austria’s post-war history was the ceremonial signing of the Austrian State Treaty on 15 May 1955 in the Marble Hall of the Upper Belvedere, restoring sovereignty to Austria.
The Marble Hall is the central ceremonial room of the Upper Belvedere and is open to the public.

Lower Belvedere
The Lower Belvedere was the residential palace of Prince Eugene and erected within a space of only 2 years. The architect was Lucas von Hildebrandt, alongside Fischer von Erlach the greatest Austrian baroque architect.
Prince Eugene’s magnificent living quarters and staterooms in the Lower Belvedere are a captivating attraction. The staterooms, for example the Hall of Grotesques, Marble Gallery and Golden Room, offer a fascinating insight into Baroque interior design.
In addition, the Lower Belvedere, including the Orangery, is the venue for impressive temporary art exhibitions.

Orangery
The grand Orangery of Prince Eugene is situated next to the Lower Belvedere. The first plant deliveries for the Orangery were recorded in 1719. Agnes Husslein Arco has opted for an elegant transformation of the Orangery into an exhibition hall which retains its Orangery character.
Next to a neutral exhibition room, the "White Cube", there is a gallery corridor on the south side which opens up a breathtaking view through the great window onto the Kammergarten (Privy Garden) and the Upper Belvedere. The gentle upwards rake of the Orangery corridor in combination with the spatial elements suspended from the ceiling takes shape as a 3-D interpretation of the baroque garden.
The direct view into the garden, the fusion of architecture and nature is particularly striking here. The Privy Garden in front of the Orangery is being newly cultivated in cooperation with the Federal Gardens.

Palace Stables
Part of the extensive Palace Stables of Prince Eugene was the so-called Prunkstall, the "ornamental" stable. The building is adorned with stucco, housed 12 exquisite riding horses and has its own fountain.
Works of art from the Middle Ages can be seen in a show depot in the Medieval Treasury in the Prunkstall.
