From 5th November 2017 to 18th February 2018 the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza will feature “Between Symbolism and Liberty. Achille Calzi” curated by Ilaria Piazza and Claudia Casali, realized in collaboration with the Town Picture Gallery and the Manfrediana Library in Faenza.
The exhibition will show the results of an important research project started about 4 years ago and that will give rise to an anthological publication, the first devoted to this extraordinary artist and intellectual from Faenza.
A multi-faceted artist and cultured person, Calzi made a significant contribution to the revival of applied arts from Faenza, ultimately expanding them into the most up-to-date examples of international Modernism, that spread from the English experiences of Arts and Crafts, across Europe and to the United States, assuming the different names and forms in: Art Nouveau in France, Jugendstil in Germany and Liberty in Italy.
Calzi embodies, for Faenza, the figure of the modern artist and designer, defined by the modernist principle of “art in everything”. The exhibition shows paintings in line with the most advanced national and international artistic trends: from Symbolism to Jugendstil, from Vienna Secession to Divisionism, graphic projects attesting the many collaborations the artist had with the major manufacturers active in the city, in the sectors of ceramics, fine woodworking and wrought iron, drawings, satirical caricatures and of course wonderful ceramics.
