in detail
The exhibition presents spectacular artefacts from prehistory and early history, as well as from ancient Saudi Arabia: finds of earliest bifaces, 6000 year-old anthropomorphic stela, monumental egyptianized colossal statues, enchanting works in glass and metal dating from Roman antiquity, as well as objects from the ceramic revolution that took place in the Islamic early period.
Chronologically arranged and presented to form an indoor archaeological landcape covering a terrain of 1300 square metres, the show makes archaeology an immediate experience and offers visitors a unique panorama of the cultural history of the Arabian Peninsula. The exhibition will see spectacular objects from the Kaaba itself and the city of Mecca go on display in Germany for the first time ever.
The exhibition has been organized by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, in partnership with the National Museums' own Museum of Islamic Art. German-led research projects conducted by the Orient Department of the German Archaeological Institute, the Zentrum Moderner Orient and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Saudi Arabia are also showcased in an exhibition room as examples of international collaborations by Berlin-based institutions. Supported by a diverse range of accompanying events on cultural heritage, the exhibition strengthens the ongoing activities into researching and preserving Saudi Arabia's Islamic and pre-Islamic cultural heritage, activities which in many cases are still in their relative infancy.
