Staatsgalerie Stuttgart

in detail

Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Spitzweg and Edouard Manet, in the early twentieth century Picasso, Henri Matisse, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Max Beckmann, in the present such popular artists as Neo Rauch and Georg Baselitz - all of them artistically addressed the theme of the studio in works that not only shed light on their oeuvres but literally merge with those oeuvres. Artists such as Constantin Brancusi, Kurt Schwitters, Piet Mondrian and Alberto Giacometti made their studios works of art in their own right. The reconstruction of Mondrian’s Parisian atelier provides the exhibition visitor incomparable insight into the workplace of this Dutch constructivist master. Multimedia works by younger artists testify to the astounding relevance of the theme for the present.

There have been studio scenes in art since the Renaissance, but it was not until the early nineteenth century that the atelier became a central theme as an expression of the myth of artistic creation. With superb loans from all over the world, the show will explore how great masters from Romanticism to the present thought and worked.
