in detail

The first tour is dedicated to the oldest collections and is entitled ‚From Antiquity to Historism‘. It is a multi-genre collection of art and art-historical exhibits, and its basic structure is intended to remain in place for a long period of time.

The way the exhibits relate to the history of both Saxony and Leipzig itself is a central aspect, since it is this that sets a personal signature and creates a sense of identity and unmistakability. For instance, the first tour contains many exhibits from the Leipzig council treasury and the art and rarities cabinet that originally formed part of the old council library. Master artists and craftsmen from Saxony are represented by furniture originating from leading Leipzig workshop, as well as ceramics, porcelain items, glass works, and wrought gold and silver works.

One of the highlights of this exhibition tour is a cabinet room containing Italian Majolika artworks from the renaissance period and three historical sets of room fittings.

A unique museum exhibits is the refectory planking from the Cori monastery near Rome. Of exotic beauty is the tapestry of chines images from Zehmen Manor near Leipzig, presented here to the public for the first time, and finally, visible again after many years of restoration, the Roman hall from the Eythla stately home, one of the houses that fell victim to the former peat mining activities in the Leipzig area.
